Network Time Protocol (NTP) is a networking protocol for clock synchronization in TCP/IP systems. In operation since before 1985, NTP is one of the oldest Internet protocols in current use.
NTP is intended to synchronize all participating devices, in order to have the same Date&Time configuration. NTP can usually maintain time to within tens of milliseconds over the public Internet, and can achieve better than one millisecond accuracy in local area networks (LAN) under ideal conditions.
The protocol is usually described in terms of a client-server model, but can as easily be used in peer-to-peer relationships where both peers consider the other to be a potential time source. Implementations send and receive timestamps using the User Datagram Protocol (UDP) on port number 123.
In LYNX, we can set and use NTP in the PC where the Property Management Unit (PMU) is installed. This will be used to maintain same Date & Time in all LYNX devices (monitors and panels) installed in the same LAN.
To set PMU as NTP, we must enable the NTP function in Installer’s Menu:
Only one NTP in the same LYNX Installation (LAN).
Once NTP has been enabled, we need to set some Windows registers.
Execute “regedit.exe” in Windows.
Then set PMU values in the following registers:
Set AnnounceFlags = 5
Set Enabled = 1
Now, we need to enable Windows Time Service (w32tm).
Reboot PC to apply changes.
Then, as soon as PMU is executed (running) it will update date&time of all LYNX devices. Additionally, this synchronization is automatically executed by PMU software every 12h.
ANNEX: Windows Firewall
In some cases, Windows Firewall may block PMU commands (NTP or even Data Base). To avoid this, make sure that PMU has inbound exception rule created:
Additionally, for NTP, it is also recommendable to create inbound & outbound rules for UDP port 123 (the one used by NTP protocols).
NOTE: Repeat the same procedure for outbound rules.
