On previous deliveries of our technical channel we have introduced the Display Extra, that adds many new interesting features for both, installers and end users. Probably one of the most useful functionalities is the addition of customized images and text, that can be used for many different purposes. This document intents to guide the installer in picture customizing and text uploading processes.
The Display Extra DUOX (reference F07450) is a graphical interface device designed to improve the information visualization of the classic 16 x 2 text display (reference F07449). It includes a 3.5” TFT color display with a resolution of 320 x 240 pixels and graphical capabilities. The Display Extra is mainly used as an agenda to store and search for residents in a building or condominium. This functionality allows the visitor to look for resident apartment number in an intuitive and easy way rather than having to remember apartment numbers.
The Display Plus is an intuitive software that allows the installer to easily manage users in the Display Extra agenda. Additionally, the Display Plus also enables the possibility to upload pictures and customize text among other features, as we will see later on this article.
2. Use of pictures
The Display Plus has two different use of pictures, standby pictures and action pictures.
2.1 Standby pictures
The standby pictures are a set of pictures that are shown in a carrousel while the panel is in stand-by or not in use. By default, three or four images (depending whether there is a guard unit in the installation or not) are alternated, with the preconfigured cadence of three seconds. These pictures contain basic instructions that guide the visitor in the call making process.
Additionally, if the building or condominium name has been set, an extra screen with the name of the building is included in the carrousel.
The Display Extra includes five factory images stored by default that are ready to use. Image 1 corresponds to FERMAX logo and this is the only picture that cannot be modified and it is always shown. Images 2, 3, 4 and 5 can be replaced by any custom image. If more than one image is enabled (up to 5 in total), these are added sequentially to the carrousel of images.
2.2 Action pictures
Each user of the agenda offers the possibility to add a customized additional text and also an additional picture. The text can be individual for each user of the agenda but due to memory resources, there is a maximum of 10 user pictures in total that can be shared among the possible 10000 users.
In this particular case, the extra text is used to indicate that a particular user works as a Lawyer. The extra picture is used to indicate to the visitor to take lift A. This picture could be shared among other users whose apartments are accessed from lift A.
This extra information can be a text and/or a picture. If both are configured, the text will be shown for a couple of seconds after that the image will be shown. The extra information can be selected to be shown during a call or during a door opening. The system has a capacity of a maximum of 10 user pictures and can be downloaded to the Display with the free software Display Plus.
3. How to upload pictures.
3.1 Converting picture format
For a correct uploading and visualization process of custom pictures to the display, the images need to be of a specific 320x240 pixels with 16bits depth 565 RGB format. Any picture can be converted to this format with a drawing or image processing software. As an example, we have used the freeware GIMP 2 (https://www.gimp.org/downloads/).
In this guide, we will upload a demo picture to the Display Extra, this picture has a resolution of 640x360 pixel. Therefore, the first thing to do is to convert the picture to required format 320x340 565RGB format:
1. Open the required file. Go to option File/Open… and select the appropriate file.
2. Scale the image. Go to Image/Scale Image…
3. Select dimensions. Make sure that fields Width and Height are not linked and type 320 and 240 respectively. Then click on the Scale button.
4. Export the new image. Finally, the file needs to be exported and saved in the required format, for this action click on File/Export As…
5. Select the required format. Set a name for the new file, then click on Select File Type and select Windows BMP image. Then click Export.
6. Save the file. Click on Advanced Options and select in 16 bits -> R5 G6 B5 as shown in the following picture, and click Export.
7. Save the file. Select the desired path to save the file.
3.2 Uploading pictures
Once all the pictures are saved in the correct format the upload process to the Display Extra can take place. In order to upload pictures the Display Plus software is required, please refer to the manual for further information:
To upload a picture, go to the Panels tab and click in Upload images.
Click on the field File and select the image that we have previously converted. If the picture is in the right format the preview window should show the image.
Then select the memory Slot (standby or action) of the picture and the position and click the Send button.
This process can take up to a minute, after that the Display Extra will reset and the picture will be stored in memory.
3.3 Making the pictures visible
The last step is to tell the display which of the images stored on memory will be shown. For this we need to enter into the programming menu of the Display Extra and select the corresponding slot.
In this case, we have enabled only picture S2 – standby 2.
4. How to upload extra text.
The text is simply uploaded by typing the desired text in the Field Text on the agenda, in this case, we have added the extra text “Lawyer” to the user “Pawel Rulikowsky” and this information will be shown during a Call. Note that this information can only be updated using the software Display Plus.
The field Text is independent for each user so we could potentially have up to 10000 different additional text, one for each user. On the other hand, regarding the action picture there can be a maximum of 10 pictures, these pictures can of course be shared among the 10000 users.
